Program Overview

The Alberta Self-Employed Farmer Stream offers experienced farmers a pathway to permanent residence by establishing a primary production farming business in Alberta. Applicants must demonstrate farm management skills, a minimum CDN $500,000 equity investment, and a net worth of at least CDN $500,000 from verifiable sources. A detailed business plan aligned with Alberta's agri-food industry is required, with priority given to economically viable proposals. Ineligible applicants include refugee claimants, live-in caregivers, temporary foreign workers outside Alberta, and international students. Support services include eligibility assessments, business plan guidance, financial documentation assistance, and connections to Alberta's agricultural resources.

This program allows experienced farmers to obtain permanent residence by establishing and operating a primary production farming business in Alberta. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee nomination or permanent residence.

Note: Applications representing the best opportunity for growth relevant to Alberta's agri-food targets will be given priority consideration.

Ineligible Applicants

The following individuals are not eligible to apply:

Ineligible Applicants (Part 1)

  • Refugee claimants or individuals involved in federal appeal/removal process
  • Live-in caregivers currently living in Canada

Ineligible Applicants (Part 2)

  • Temporary foreign workers working outside Alberta
  • International students in Canada (including co-op work placements/internships)
